Olympic fever has been sweeping the country this month. We’re all armchair athletes as we watch feats of strength, speed, and grace that seem physically impossible right from our own living rooms. The competition truly unites the country—and the world—as we all band together to root for our teams.

Older adults may have thought their competition days were behind them…but there are Olympic-style athletic competitions earmarked for adults, ages 40 and up, right in Massachusetts.

Started in 1991, the Massachusetts Senior Games aim to promote health and fitness of older adults through activities, educational programs, and athletic events. More than 1,300 athletes (grouped in five-year age categories) compete in the Winter and Summer Games held at Springfield College. Anyone can register—from the most novice competitor to nationally ranked athletes. Winners from the Massachusetts Senior Games are eligible to compete in the National Senior Games. The next national competition will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2019.
